Traffic laws and rules have its own purpose-to make the road safer for motorists, car passengers, bicycle-riders, and pedestrians.
Here are the basic traffic laws and rules in California:
* Respect other people’s “right of way”
Give way to other motorists, bicycle-riders, pedestrians, and especially emergency vehicles such as the ambulance, police cars, and fire trucks.
* Ensure the safety of pedestrians
A car driver should prioritize the safety of pedestrians by not using the sidewalk and stopping before a crosswalk to allow people to pass.
* Follow the road signs
“Slow down”, “No U Turn”, “No Blowing of Horns”, “Yield”, “Stop”, “Railroad crossing”, and other road signs should be strictly followed. Also, motorists should obey pedestrian and traffic lights.
* Observe the speed limit
In California, most highways and two-lane streets have speed limits of 65 mph and 55 mph, respectively. Regardless of the posted limit, it is purely a common sense to slow down when the road is slippery, the weather condition is bad (e.g. foggy, snowy, rainy), there is a huge volume of cars on the highway, and there is a blind intersection ahead.
* Use light signals
When turning left, right, stopping, slowing down, and passing other motorists, always use the proper light signals. Hand-and-arm signals can also be used especially when the light signals cannot be easily seen because of the bright sunlight.
* Park only in designated areas and follow the parking rules
Some parking rules: motorists should not park in areas with diagonal lanes (crosshatched), unless they are handicapped; follow the colored curbs in parking; and park only in designated places.
* Do not use mobile phones while driving
According to California law, it is illegal to use any electronic communication device in writing, sending, and reading text messages while driving on the road.
